Team Canada at the 2022 World Masters Weightlifting Championships

A whole lot of Champions

After almost three years training for a minimal number of weightlifting competitions, an impressive number of Canadian athletes participated in the 2022 World Masters Weightlifting Championships in Orlando, Florida.  This year the event was hosted by the USAW Masters Committee and as usual, they have done an excellent job.

 

Due to some remaining travel restrictions, some of our members could not participate, however, we managed to see 92 members compete, with 56 of those athletes belonging to our women’s contingent. Currently, our Records Secretary has received twelve applications from participating members, nine of which, were also from our women athletes.

 

Although our Team consists of 56 women and 36 men, points are only accumulated from 8 members of each team. Our Mens team won second place with 198 points, 14 points less than the USAW mens team.  Our Womens team won second place with 196 points, tying the American team.  However, the points are based on the medals earned.  The American team won 7 golds to our one, so that was why they took first.  If totals were based on the total S-M-F points, the Womens Team would have won by 116 S-M-F points. Still, an excellent accomplishment by both of our teams. Information about team selection and points can be found on our website in the Regulations section.

This year was also the first international masters event that included adaptive athletes participating as para weightlifters.  Participating as our first Canadian para weightlifters were Nalani Perry and Scott Glass. Both secured Gold in their age/bodyweight and para weightlifting categories. I hope to see more adaptive athletes take up our sport at the club level in preparation for the Canadian Masters Nationals next year.

 

All our competing athletes will receive 3 Hall of Fame points for participating. For athletes who received medals, the gold medal athletes receive 7 points, the silver medal athletes receive 5 points and the bronze medal athletes receive 4 points.  Hall of Fame information can be found on this website in the Awards section.  Judy Quinn, one of our gold medal winners, was presented the Pan American Masters Hall of Fame Award after being officially inducted in 2020.  Congratulations Judy.

 

In addition, if any of our participants also participated in this year’s Pan American Masters Championships, the Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championships, and their Provincial Masters Weightlifting Championships, they can apply for the President’s Attollo Award.  Information can be found on this website in the Awards section.

CANADIAN MASTERS WEIGHTLIFTERS READY TO HEAT UP ORLANDO

It might be winter, but the sport of masters weightlifting will be sizzling with Canadian Masters Weightlifters at the Wyndham Resort International in Orlando, Florida. From December 2-10, weights will be flung overhead, weightlifting shoes will be fixed on the weightlifting platform and the Canadian flag will be flown on the podium during the 2022 World Masters Weightlifting Championships. This international masters event is hosted by the USAW and its Masters Committee under the leadership of Chairman Michael Cohen. Canadian athletes are well represented over their ten bodyweight categories and eleven age categories. John Margolis and Doris Hellenbart have the honour of representing Canada in the 80 and 75 age categories, respectively. Competing will be 64 women and 46 men.

 

This is also the first World Masters Weightlifting Championships which will include adaptive athletes competing as para weightlifters. In Canada, the athletes in this newly included category are referred to as Para Weightlifters. The International Masters Weightlifting Association (IMWA) has opted to use the USAW expression “adaptive weightlifting.” Representing Canada will be Nalani Perry, from Nova Scotia,and Saskatchewan’s Scott Glass. The inclusion of para weightlifting in Canada started with the development of policies and procedures by their President, Mark Gomes and the promotion of this inclusivity by their Federation’s Director for the Advancement of Para Weightlifting, Nalani Perry. The Canadian Masters Weightlifting community was very pleased to see the International Masters Weightlifting Association, under the leadership of Secretariat Denise Offermann and General Secretary William (Bill) Barton, take the bold step to quickly invite and welcome adaptive athletes into the international community as adaptive athletes/para weightlifters.

 

Qualifying for the World Masters Championships is not an easy task, particularly with the reduced opportunity to participate in qualifying competitions during the Covid pandemic restrictions. But these athletes did just that and have well surpassed the qualifying totals in every single age and bodyweight category. Without competitions sanctioned by Canadian Provincial Weightlifting Associations (affiliates of Weightlifting Canada Haltérophilie, “WCH”) and their own Canadian Masters Weightlifting Federation Haltérophilie Canadienne Maîtres (CMWFHCM), these athletes would haven not reached their current level of achievement and an invitation from the Internal Masters Weightlifting Association to participate.

 

Although all participating members constitute the “Canadian Team”, the official Canadian team is selected by the National Chair based on the award points accumulated by ten women and ten men selected. If you know these athletes, please generously support them to help defray some of their expenses; for as you know, Masters are solely financially responsible for competing in national and international masters championships. Masters Federations do not receive government funding, though some Provincial Weightlifting Associations may provide some grants.

Canadians capture medals at the 2021 Pan American Masters Weightlifting Championships

The 2021 Pan Am Masters Championships have concluded and our small Canadian contingent held their own.  We managed 2 Gold, 6 Silver, 1 Bronze medal and 4 made it close to the podium. This is the first international competition held in-person during Covid pandemic travel restrictions and in an American State with elevated Delta variant cases of Covid-19.  Our members took all the necessary precautions and we are all very proud of their participation. 

 

Congratulations to our Gold medalists, André Boutin and Amanda Whiting.  Our Silver medalists were: Annie-Claude Delisle, Heather Emslie, Marty Giles, Manon Poulin, Nicole Lee, Pamela Warner and Dawn Schum. Our Bronze medalists was Russel Flores and our almost bronze medalists were Cynthia Collins, Jennifer Hamilton, Krista Pell and Valerie Saucier.

It is unfortunate that the Pan American Masters only had  22 participants that were not from North America (Canada, USA and Mexico), with most from Dominican Republic (7). Masters Weightlifting is not as developed in the South American countries as it is in North America. With travel restrictions of South American countries added to pandemic travel restrictions, this event usually takes on the image of a purely American, and at times Canadian,

Championship.  Perhaps the IWF Masters may encourage two regional geographic areas to replace the Pan American Masters area, hence allowing more Central and South American countries to foster Masters growth among their own countries with less travel restrictions between them.  We are so lucky in North America where Masters Weightlifters have Federations that are recognized and supported by their National Sports Organizations.

 

Hopefully we may see the Pan Am Masters return to Canada pending a suitable host and joint approval of both the Canadian Masters Weightlifting Federation and Weightlifting Canada Haltérophilie.

CANADA’S BEST MASTERS WEIGHTLIFTERS RECEIVE THEIR AWARDS

Our 2021 Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championships were certainly a unique approach at trying to avoid the devastating impact of the COVID pandemic by providing a different and unique approach to our National Meet. All members were eligible to enter this competition without a qualifying total.  And our World Masters participants, upon paying their entry fee, were allowed to submit their totals from the World Masters as their Canadian Masters lifts. Thanks to Dakota Weightlifting Club of Winnipeg, Manitoba, for organizing the event, the referees and tabulating a considerable amount of data.

Despite these pandemic challenges, two athletes stood out as being our best overall weightlifters.  Our best Woman athlete was Isabelle Gauthier, from Montréal, Québec and our best male athlete was Glen Hutchinson, from Okotoks, Alberta. Both, of course, were Gold Medal winners at the 2021 Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championships. 

You may recall Isabelle’s accomplishments at the World Masters in Montreal where she captured the Clean and Jerk World Record (90 kg) and the Total Record (159 kg) in the same W45/59 Category.  Women’s Team Canada took the Silver Award that year due to her and her teammates’ excellent lifting.  She also came very close to being the World Masters Best Woman Weightlifter, placing second. This year Isabelle lifted 70 kg in the Snatch and 88 kg in the Clean and Jerk for a total of 158 kg at the World Masters/Canadian Masters Championships and secured the Gold Medal for both Meets.

You may recall Glen Hutchinson, who was a strong member of the Men’s Team at the 2019 Montreal World Masters.  His lifts of 115 kg Snatch and 140 kg Clean and Jerk for a total of 255 kg, earned him a gold medal and his Team a gold medal in 2019.  This year Glen Snatched 117 kg, Clean and Jerked 147 kg and Totaled 264 kg, at the World Masters (Silver Medal)/Canadian Masters Championships (Gold Medal). Watch out for him in 2022; he’s a man on a mission!!

I expect to see both Isabelle and Glen in New Brunswick, for the 2022 Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championships defending their titles and enjoying friendly sights, sounds and folks of Moncton.

IWF Masters World Championship comes to Orlando USA

The IWF Masters, USA Weightlifting and USA Masters Weightlifting are proud to announce the 2020 IWF  Masters World Championship will be held in Orlando, Florida, USA from 28 August to 5 September.

The event was originally due be held in Obrighem, Germany who unfortunately were unable to host the event in 2020, at which time the IWF Masters invited the United States to host the event as the runner-up in the bidding process, originally completed in Barcelona, Spain in August 2018.

The IWF Masters World Championship is the premiere world-wide event for Weightlifting athletes aged 35 and over, attracting approximately 800 athletes from around the world, competing in 5 year increments from 35 up to over 80 years of age.

Competition and housing will be at the Wyndham Resort on International Drive, Orlando, USA located an easy shuttle or car ride from Orlando International Airport (MCO) which has direct links to nations across the world. The Wyndham Resort is also close by to Orlando area tourist attractions such as Disney World, Universal and others.

“We are grateful to the IWF Masters for the opportunity to return the IWF  Masters World Championship to the United States of America for the first time in many years. We appreciate the trust placed upon us to deliver a world class event for Masters in just 8 months.”

The 2019 World Masters Weightlifting Championships will no doubt be long remembered by Canadian Masters lifters. First of all, the venue was held on home soil in Montreal, and from all accounts the organizers did a stellar job in making this a truly world class event. Canadian lifters responded in kind, with the Womens team capturing second place while the Men’s team captured first place.

 

The Canadian Masters Teams at international events are selected in a specific way.  First, invitations to compete at the 2019 World Masters are sent out to qualifying athletes by the IWF Masters Secretariat. Once athletes accept the invitation, the Office of the National Chair (ONC) considers two important criteria for team selection. Team points are based on an athlete’s potential medal position and the number of competitors in a category. Athletes are ranked according to their percentage of their qualifying total (QT). All of our team members had surpassed 120% of their QT. ONC also considers how many athletes are competing in the same category as the potential gold and silver medalists.  The greater the number of athletes in a category, the greater the points that can be potentially awarded. The members of the men’s and women’s teams for 2019 were as follows:

Team Canada Men, winning the first-place trophy was composed of (and in order of % above the QT): Marcel Perron, Doug Sinclair, Éric Chevrier, Glen Hutchinson, Gabriel Auclair, David Adams, Terry Hadlow, and Jocelyn Normand.

 

The CMWFHC also wishes to thank and congratulate all members who participated in this year’s competition. It was amazing to have over 150 of our athletes involved and we sincerely hope that it was an inspiring time of personal growth and development in your weightlifting journey. IWF World Masters Championship reinforces weightlifting as sport for all

The IWF World Masters Championship concluded in Montreal on Saturday 24 August, following nine days of competition which showcased weightlifting as a sport that can be practised by men and women of all ages, body types, and backgrounds.

A total of 689 (385 male and 304 female athletes) from 54 countries competed in the Championship which received the original 1976 Olympic Games competition platform from Montreal. Athletes aged over 35 years of age took part in more than 90 categories divided by age and weight. This year a Preliminary Entry System was introduced to calculate the best 700 athletes per verified entry total registered.

The Championship’s oldest competitor was 87 year old Tsutomu Kobayashi from Japan, who competed in the M80/73kg and lifted a total of 77kg. Meanwhile in the women’s category, Lorraine Pelletier, born in 1943 from the host nation Canada, was the oldest female competitor and lifted a total of 66kg.

The Championships demonstrated the positive mental and physical benefits of weightlifting and the important role it can play in maintaining strength later in life.

IWF President Tamas Ajan said:

“The IWF World Masters Championship has once again demonstrated that people are never too old to get involved in weightlifting. We have seen men and women, from different countries and backgrounds, and different ages from 35 up to 87, come together through their shared love of weightlifting and the benefits it brings them. There are so many advantages of weightlifting and everyone is able to draw something different from the sport. These Championships are about more than who wins or who lifts the heaviest weights, they are about persistence and mental discipline and people challenging themselves to achieve their very best.”

The 2020 IWF Masters World Championships will be in Obrigheim, Germany from the 28 August to 6 September.

Montreal 2019 World Masters Weightlifting Championship

Successful Championships

Montreal, August 25, 2019 - The Montreal World Masters Weightlifting Championship concluded on Saturday. The competition, showcasing the world’s best weightlifters aged 35+, welcomed competitors from all continents, including 150 Canadians, at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre. Athletes from 60 countries were competing, a record for a World Masters Championship.

Numerous athletes enjoyed their stay in Quebec’s metropolis, as mentioned by Mario Robitaille, vice-president of the organizing committee.

“A dozen athletes told me these were the best World Master Weightlifting Championship they’ve ever been to. We put together a great championship, and we have much to be proud of. Yves Carignan (President of the organizing committee) and I are also competing, so with our experience, we know what it takes to keep the athletes happy. We are very proud, and we delivered on our promises.”

Families and friends of the competitors from all around the world could follow the competition live on two Internet platforms with a live medal count. This World Masters technological first was made possible thanks to the work of Julien Carignan, Yves Carignan’s son.

Highest Honours to Kristi Brewer and Marcel Perron

American Kristi Brewer and Quebecois Marcel Perron were crowned the weightlifters with the best balanced scorecard across all age and weight categories.

Mario Robitaille was delighted by Perron’s victory, which represents more than a simple sporting result.

“It’s really something to win this is Montreal! This was expected from him. He suffered a CVA three years ago, and we set up a fundraising campaign to get him special treatments. He was back on his feet quickly, but in January 2018, we didn’t know if he would be able to compete. He took about two months off before getting back in the gym.”

These World Championships closed the loop opened 40 years ago by Yves Carignan when he competed at the Montreal Olympic Games.

The next World Masters Weightlifting Championship will be held in Germany.
