Team Canada at the 2022 World Masters Weightlifting Championships
A whole lot of Champions
After almost three years training for a minimal number of weightlifting competitions, an impressive number of Canadian athletes participated in the 2022 World Masters Weightlifting Championships in Orlando, Florida. This year the event was hosted by the USAW Masters Committee and as usual, they have done an excellent job.
Due to some remaining travel restrictions, some of our members could not participate, however, we managed to see 92 members compete, with 56 of those athletes belonging to our women’s contingent. Currently, our Records Secretary has received twelve applications from participating members, nine of which, were also from our women athletes.
Although our Team consists of 56 women and 36 men, points are only accumulated from 8 members of each team. Our Mens team won second place with 198 points, 14 points less than the USAW mens team. Our Womens team won second place with 196 points, tying the American team. However, the points are based on the medals earned. The American team won 7 golds to our one, so that was why they took first. If totals were based on the total S-M-F points, the Womens Team would have won by 116 S-M-F points. Still, an excellent accomplishment by both of our teams. Information about team selection and points can be found on our website in the Regulations section.

Women: Megan Apostoleris (Guardian), Joanne Jeffrey, Isabelle Gauthier, Laurie Meschishnick, Molly Zirkle, Anita Boray, Sharon Ko, Sylvie Guénette (Manon Poulin, Carol Akasaka, Cathy Hambly).
This year was also the first international masters event that included adaptive athletes participating as para weightlifters. Participating as our first Canadian para weightlifters were Nalani Perry and Scott Glass. Both secured Gold in their age/bodyweight and para weightlifting categories. I hope to see more adaptive athletes take up our sport at the club level in preparation for the Canadian Masters Nationals next year.
All our competing athletes will receive 3 Hall of Fame points for participating. For athletes who received medals, the gold medal athletes receive 7 points, the silver medal athletes receive 5 points and the bronze medal athletes receive 4 points. Judy Quinn, one of our gold medal winners, was presented the Pan American Masters Hall of Fame Award after being officially inducted in 2020. Congratulations Judy.
In addition, if any of our participants also participated in this year’s Pan American Masters Championships, the Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championships, and their Provincial Masters Weightlifting Championships, they can apply for the President’s Attollo Award. Congratulations to all our members who were able to participate this year. Now their plans start for the 2023 World Masters Weightlifting Championships next August in Krakow, Poland.
Équipe Canada aux Championnats Mondiaux Maîtres d’haltérophilie 2022

Après presque trois ans d’entraînement pour un nombre minimum de compétitions d’haltérophilie, un nombre impressionnant d’athlètes canadiens ont participé aux Championnats Mondiaux Maîtres d’Haltérophilie 2022 à Orlando, en Floride. Cette année l’hôte de la compétition était le Comité Maîtres de la USAW et comme d’habitude, ils ont fait un excellent travail.
Dû à des restrictions de voyage encore en place, certains de nos membres n’ont pu participer, cependant, nous avons vu 92 membres compétitionner, avec 56 de ces athlètes appartenant à notre contingent de femmes. Jusqu’à présent, notre Secrétaire des records a reçu douze applications de membres participant, et parmi celles-ci neuf provenaient de nos athlètes féminines.
Bien que notre équipe eût 56 femmes et 36 hommes, des points sont seulement accumulés comptant 8 membres de chaque équipe. Notre équipe d’hommes a gagné la deuxième place avec 198 points, 14 points de moins que l’équipe des hommes de la USAW. Notre équipe de femmes a gagné la deuxième place avec 196 points, égalisant l’équipe américaine. Cependant, les points sont basés sur les médailles gagnées. L’équipe américaine a gagné 7 médailles d’or comparé à une pour nous, alors ceci est pourquoi elles ont gagné la première place. Si les totaux étaient basés sur les points S-M-F, l’équipe des femmes auraient gagné par une marge de 116 points S-M-F. Quand même, un excellent accomplissement par nos deux équipes. Cette année a aussi été la première compétition internationale Maîtres qui a inclut des athlètes adaptifs participant en tant que para-haltérophiles. Nalani Perry et Scott Glass ont été nos premiers para-haltérophiles canadiens. Les deux ont gagné une médaille d’or dans leurs catégories d’âge/poids dans les catégories de para-haltérophilie. J’espère voir plus d’athlètes adaptifs se joindre à notre sport au niveau de club en préparation pour les Championnats Canadiens Nationaux Maîtres l’an prochain.
Tous nos athlètes compétiteurs vont recevoir 3 points du Temple de la Renommée pour leur participation. Pour les athlètes recevant des médailles, les athlètes avec une médaille d’or reçoivent 7 points, ceux avec une médaille d’argent 5 points et ceux avec une médaille de bronze 4 points. Judy Quinn, une de nos gagnantes de médaille d’or, a reçu le Prix du Temple de la Renommée Panaméricain Maîtres après avoir été officiellement intronisée en 2020. Felicitations Judy.
De plus, si n’importe quel de nos athlètes participant a aussi participé aux Championnats Panaméricains Maîtres de cette année, les Championnats Canadiens Maîtres d’Haltérophilie, et leurs championnats provinciaux Maîtres d’haltérophilie, ceux-ci peuvent appliquer pour le Prix Attollo du Président. L’information à ce sujet se trouve dans la section Prix du site web.
